Green Space Challenge Stories Day 14

“My family has lived in the historic village of Romeo for six generations. It has been so nice to see residents embrace the historic essence of Romeo, whether it is restoration of many of our beautiful homes or saving buildings by repurposing them. Just one example of repurposing a historic building is The Abbey on Main. I was baptized, confirmed and married in this building when it was the Congregational Church.

I am proud to be a member of the GSOPS grass roots group. The property on Prospect Street means a lot to me. My great, great, great uncle, Edwin Giddings was on the board for the University of Michigan Romeo campus on this site. Generations of my family have either graduated from the school on this site or attended it as junior high students.

Our community has a wonderful opportunity to not only maintain the educational history of this property but to repurpose it as an arboretum. Romeo is sadly in need of more green space. The Prospect Street property can be transformed into a wonderful green space. It will be a place to breathe fresh air, relax and enjoy the wonders of nature, a place to learn about our native fauna and flora. This place matters. It is my hope that our community can come together to embrace nature and celebrate our history on this piece of property.”
