Community-Powered Conservation
This May, we launched an innovative and eco-friendly land restoration effort is coming to life at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Green Space Romeo and Lake St. Clair CISMA teamed up with Michigoat to bring in a herd of hardworking goats to tackle invasive plant species.
For three days, 30 goats called the church property home, grazing on invasive vegetation that threatens the health of the local ecosystem. This method uses targeted grazing to restore balance to the land in a sustainable, low-impact way.
Thank you to everyone who supported this effort with a Goat-Fund-Me sponsorship and came out to our Goat Meet and Greet on May 2nd.
Why Goats?
Goats are remarkably effective at clearing invasive plants, including privet and honeysuckle. They can navigate difficult terrain, consume dense overgrowth, and fertilize the soil as they graze—making them a powerful, all-in-one restoration solution.
To ensure safety and efficiency, the goats are enclosed within a movable electric fence. This temporary fencing system allows the team to precisely control where the goats graze, maximizing their impact over the three-day period. Once the goat visit is complete, the fence is removed, leaving behind a healthier, more manageable landscape.
A Model for Sustainable Change
This partnership between Green Space Romeo, Lake St. Clair CISMA and Michigoat highlights a growing movement toward nature-based solutions in land management. By using goats, the project reduces environmental impact while fostering community engagement and awareness.
But the goats are doing more than just eating—they are helping restore a vital green space and demonstrating how creative approaches can lead to meaningful environmental change.
Whether you care about conservation, are curious about goat grazing, or just want to support a local initiative, sponsoring a goat is a simple and meaningful way to get involved in the community. We hope to invite Michigoat back to the St. Paul’s green space this fall for another round of munching invasives and will offer another opportunity to sponsor a goat.
Goats at Work!
Thanks to Jessica and Joe and all the goats of Michigoat for 3 days (May 1-3, 2026) of hard work! Here are a few photos and videos from our Goat Meet and Greet on May 2nd and media coverage from our friends at Channel 4 WDIV, Romeo Record, Macomb Daily and the Episcopal News Service.
