Green Space Challenge Stories Day 19

“Do you get a little sad when you see new subdivisions or shopping plazas being built around Romeo? Do you get frustrated whenever you drive and you have to deal with traffic where you didn’t used to? Then please consider donating to Green Space on Prospect Street.

My name is Daniel Griffin. I grew up in Romeo. My grandparents moved here and raised 10 children right next door to the Romeo Junior High on Prospect St. My wife Julia and I graduated from Romeo High School in the class of 2001. My daughters Layla and Ivy will graduate from Romeo in the classes of 2031 and 2036.

This place matters.

Romeo was a village before there was a school on Prospect St. That school is gone now, but the village will remain. I don’t think anybody from outside of our village should get to decide what happens to our land. There’s plenty of land within the school district for more homes to be built on. 297 Prospect Street is the Village of Romeo’s land. I don’t care about the school board’s fiscal responsibility. In a few years they will want millions of more dollars,  and we’ll cough it up.

I don’t care about tax revenue to be generated. The government will always need more and we’ll keep paying. It’s never enough. I think a Green Space on Prospect Street would be a priceless asset for the Village of Romeo. We can always make more money but we can’t make more land.

We have a chance to build something great right in the heart of the village, that everyone can and should enjoy. We have this one chance to build a legacy that we can work towards for generations to come. We can work together, and create a space of true beauty and nature, that we can be proud of now and forever. I want this for Romeo and anyone who visits here. I don’t want this for me.

I’d actually love to live on that property. But that thinking is selfish and shortsighted.

I don’t want this land to have. I want this land to give.”
