Green Space Challenge Stories Day 22
“We had been looking for a house in Romeo for several years and had a dream to retire in Romeo. When the land at the corner of Benjamin and First Street went up for sale, we decided to purchase it and build a home that would ‘fit’ into the Village of Romeo. The house that had previously been there had burned down. We purchased the land in 2020 when COVID hit, so decided to postpone the construction, hoping construction costs would come down. In 2022, we decided to move ahead with the construction of the home. After raising five children in Macomb, this was to be our future retirement home.
We looked forward to walking to the historic downtown together for meals and events, especially with our grandson, Grayson and future grandkids. Two weeks after closing on our construction loan, Gary suffered a stroke and passed away a week later. This left me to build the house on my own. Even though Gary never saw the house in person, he was part of the planning and will always be a part of the home.
The Green Space is important to the Guilbault Family as a place to walk to and share with neighbors and family.
I have made a pledge to the Green Space in memory of my husband, Gary Guilbault. I challenge all my friends and neighbors to join me in donating or pledging today. The time is now.”
