Green Space Challenge Stories Day 16
“In April 1983, my wife Diane and I moved to Bruce Township. We have lived on that property ever since. In the early days we kept lots of farm animals and a large vegetable garden. We became beekeepers about 10 years ago. It was a great experience for our two children, Doug and Bridget, to experience rural life but still be close enough to the village of Romeo for plenty of other activities. Both of our children attended Hamilton-Parsons, Romeo Middle School and then graduated from Romeo High School in 2007 and 2008, respectively.
Doug and I were very involved in boy scouts, and I was the cubmaster and den leader for Pack 259 at Hamilton Parsons. Doug later went on to earn his Eagle Scout award. Bridget was very involved with Dancer’s Image, Brownies along with her mom and a member of the Romeo HS tennis team. I was also very involved in the Science Olympiad program along with my kids. I was the head coach for both the Ham-Par and the Romeo Middle School teams. We had some very competitive teams and one year our Romeo Middle School team just missed going to the State finals by one place.
More recently, I helped build the new Romeo Area Optimist Club and we are supporters of GSOPS. We look forward to participating in future events on the grounds of GSOPS. I am also an MSU Extension Master Gardener and a Michigan Conservation Steward and I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge and time to help build and maintain the gardens and arboretum at GSOPS. This is like having a mini-Central Park right here in Romeo. Go GSOPS!”
