This Place Matters
Written by Ed Kiefer March 2024

on a barren land, where the rock still stands
a remnant of years gone by
our chance to save this site from an early grave
of memories and alibis.

In the shadow of the old greys house once tattered
a canvas for nature’s flair
children’s laughter the pitter patter of paws rain drops and chitter-chatter
bells of Abbey ringing through the air.

because this place matters \ feel the grass run through your toes
because this place matters \ a garden of connecting souls
because this place matters \ a sacred spot in the heart of town
because this place matters \ these old middle school grounds

Ms. Arvensis says we don’t need more fences,
rollin’ stops, concrete and motor fumes
what we need is less speed carried away by the gentle breeze
on Prospect Street from July to June

stories untold will soon unfold
and one day reach a million blooms
so open up your blinds to the kryptonite of hard times
and meet me in our green space living room

because this place matters \ feel the grass run through your toes
because this place matters \ a garden of connecting souls
because this place matters \ a sacred spot in the heart of town
because this place matters \ these old middle school grounds

just imagine the sounds coming from these old middle school grounds
if you’re lost get found on these old middle school grounds.
pictured wedding gowns on these old middle school grounds.
cause this place matters save these old middle school grounds
