Green Space Challenge Stories Day 6
“I moved to Macomb County from Austin, TX a little over two years ago. Upon exploring the area, I quickly determined that I want to make Romeo my home just as soon as I could! I was drawn to the charming historic homes, the friendly community, and the walkable neighborhoods with lovely gardens. Having a local green space that people can walk to (or drive if they live further away), gather, enjoy nature, and experience the history and beauty of the community would be the icing on the cake.
Growing up in Uvalde, Texas my family took advantage of the natural beauty of the area. Birthday parties at the town park were a staple, and I have fond memories of exploring the trees and local river that ran through the park. As the oldest of five kids with two teacher parents, we did not have a budget for big family vacations, but every fall we spent a weekend camping at Garner State Park (about 30 miles North of Uvalde) and it remains one of my favorite places on the planet!
I raised my own children in Austin and we were blessed with a robust neighborhood park system, owned and maintained by the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Dept. My kids grew up with almost daily walks to local Ramsey Park where I got to meet and mingle with other local parents and my children could play with other kids. Being Texas, many of the neighborhood parks had swimming pools that opened in the summer (free to any and all people) and both of my daughters participated in summer swim team programs at the park. I am so grateful that my children were able to grow up with many parks and green spaces available to explore and learn to appreciate nature. As an adult, I personally find that green space is a critical part of maintaining balance and good mental health.
There are so many benefits to having Green Space available in a community! Children who live in housing that doesn’t allow for backyards can come and enjoy the freedom of playing in grass and enjoying nature. School kids can come on field trips and learn about local plants and the importance of preservation. People of all ages can take advantage of the physical and mental health benefits of spending time in a beautiful outdoor space. And, perhaps most importantly, a Green Space can help build community which, after all, is what Romeo seems to be all about.”
