Did you know that in one week it will be the first day of winter? Despite the snow and cold, it’s not officially winter until the winter solstice on December 21st. The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year, so the days will only be getting longer starting very soon.
Trying to find ways to get outside this winter? Here are 9 ideas of things you can do near Romeo:
1. Walk Around Town and Admire Christmas Decor
Downtown Romeo is a great place to walk with local businesses all showing their holiday cheer. If you get cold, there are plenty of places to stop for a warm drink or bite to eat.
2. Hit the Sledding Hill by the Romeo Parks and Rec Center
Romeo-Washington-Bruce Parks and Rec has a center located on Morton Street in downtown Romeo. Next to the center is a hill perfect for sledding in the winter months!
3. Bundle Up and Walk or Jog Around Stony Creek Lake
Stony Creek Metropark has a paved hiking/biking loop that circles the lake and is 6.1 miles long. This path is frequently cleared from snow and ice and is a great place to walk or jog when it gets treacherous out.
The daily entrance fee to Stony Creek Metropark is $10/car. Alternatively, you can buy an annual pass for $40/car (Macomb County resident cost). The annual pass gives you access to 13 Huron-Clinton Metroparks.
4. Try Skiing or Snowboarding at Pine Knob
Pine Knob is a ski hill located in Clarkston, about a 40-minute drive from Romeo. Prices vary so check out their website for lift ticket and rental prices. For new skiiers and snowboarders, Pine Knob has a ski school that is open for daily lessons.
5. Go Ice Fishing at Addison Oaks
Ice fishing is allowed on many local lakes, including Buhl Lake in Addison Oaks. The park staff does not monitor ice conditions, so follow DNR ice safety tips and use good judgment before you head out!
Addison Oaks is free for Oakland County residents. For non-Oakland County residents, it is $12 for a day pass for $50 for an annual pass.
6. Make a Snowman or Other Snow Sculpture
The best winter activities can be done in your own backyard! Make a snowman or get creative and make a snow sculpture.
7. Take a Walk on the Macomb Orchard Trail and Stop by Frontier Town for a Warm Drink
The Macomb Orchard Trail is not cleared from snow and ice, but is a great place to get in a good, long walk. Frontier Town can be accessed from the Macomb Orchard Trail and can be a fun spot to stop for a coffee or snack.
8. Chart a New Path in the Snow or Follow Some Footprints
When there is fresh snow, chart your own path or look for animal tracks and see how far you can follow them!
9. For the Extra Cold Days, Stay Warm and Go to Stony Creek Nature Center or Seven Ponds Nature Center
Sometimes, it is just a little too cold out! On those days, you can still learn about nature. Check out Stony Creek Nature Center or Seven Ponds Nature Center for a fun educational experience.
Be sure to check the hours they are open before you go. The daily entrance fee to Stony Creek Metropark is $10/car. Admission to the Seven Ponds Nature Center is $3/person and is free for children 12 and younger.
Happy holidays from Green Space Romeo!
