Big Tree Hunt in Michigan

Do you have a big tree in your yard? Do you know of a really big tree? The hunt is on for the biggest tree in Michigan.

Up until August 22, 2025, you can record a large Michigan tree for the chance to win Michigan’s Big Tree Hunt Contest. The only rules are that the tree must be alive and accessible for verification. Trees are measured by the circumference, so it is super easy to do! It is completely free to participate and you get the chance to be out in nature, looking at trees.

Prizes will be given for the following categories:

  • Largest tree found by a Big Tree Hunter age 16 or older
  • Largest tree found by a Big Tree Hunter age 15 or younger
  • Largest White Pine (Michigan’s State Tree), any age
  • Largest tree found for each county in Michigan
  • Tree (of any species) that is larger than the current registered Michigan State Champion or potential co-champion

Interested in participating? Here is what to do next.

Step 1: Find a Big Tree

Step 2: Measure 4 1/2 feet up the tree

If your tree splits or is on a slope, see the below image to determine how the measurement should be taken.

Step 3: Measure the circumference of the tree at 4 1/2 feet with a piece of string

Step 4: Lay the string straight and measure

Step 5: Take pictures!

Make sure you get a picture of the measurement you took, the tree on its own, and a picture of a leaf or a twig for identification.

Step 6: Submit your findings
